Auleja village, whose houses are on the banks of the lake of the same name, is located about 25 km north of Krāslava, and greets visitors to Latgale with an unusual architectural monument - St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church (18th century). This structure, untypical of Catholic sacral architecture, combines two different compositional principles – Greek centric and Latin horizontal layouts. The church’s exterior is enhanced by two not particularly high towers and a portico risalit crowned by an attic with a curved pediment. This structure in which an attempt has been made to synthesize opposing Orthodox and Catholic worship aspects, is a good illustration of Latgale’s situation as a border land in the Baltic space.
Auleja is well known throughout Latvia for its authentic folklore ensemble and skillful handicrafts makers.
