This town set in the beautiful Latgale Highland, at the junction of several roads, 50 km north of Krāslava, was given the  name Ezernieki (“the place of lakes”) in 1938 – and not without justification (it was previously called Bukmuiža). Ezernieki is right on the beautiful, bay and island strewn Lake Ežezers. Its islands, the Pahatnieki Isthmus and the Pilori oak grove adjacent to the lake are part of the state-protected Ezernieki natural landscape region.
Visitors to Lake Ežezeri also usually stop by Bukmuiža Catholic Church (consecrated 1830). The artistically valuable interior objects include a Classicist altar and sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul (second half of the 19th century).
