Those wishing to enjoy the unique beauty of Latgale’s "land of the blue lakes" should climb the highest peak in the southern part of the Eastern Latgale Highland Sauleskalns (211 m above sea level) on a sunny day. From here a sweeping panorama opens up, with several lake clusters especially prominent. At the foot of Sauleskalns lies the deepest lake in the Baltic countries, Lake Drīdza (65.1 m). Sauleskalns, which is today one of the most popular tourist attractions in Latgale, was a site of worship of the ancient Latgalians many centuries ago.
