Bērzgale (about 30 km southwest of Preiļi) mainly attracts visitors to Latgale with its Catholic Church (1751). This wooden structure whose layout is based around the Latin cross form widely employed in the region’s sacral architecture is set on a pretty foothill beside Lake Rušons. The church’s structure places it in the twin-towered quasi basilica group. Its mid space and chorale with a polygon apse are covered by a gently sloping, elliptical arch. The interior objects preserved from the time of the church’s construction, the altar and the organ backcloth, are decorated with figurative Baroque wood carvings, which are masterfully finished and testify to the skill of their unknown creator.
