Lake Rušons is the second largest lake in the Latgale Highland (23.7 km2 in area, 13.10 m long, 5.6 km wide, 29.9 m greatest depth). The lake has many bays, isthmuses, islands and peninsulas. Lake Rušons’ Upursala (“sacrifice island) has an important architectural monument, the Upurkalns pagan worship site, while the island of Govsaliņa is an ancient Latgalian settlement site. Many interesting isolated finds have been made around the lake, including Arab coins. On its eastern shore are the Rušons Catholic parish St. Michael’s Church (1816) and the 18th century Dominican cloister building.
